If you’re planning a wedding, there’s no doubt that choosing a location will be one of the biggest decisions you need to make. If you’re tempted by a city location then there are some major advantages compared to a more rural setting. For example, travel and accommodation will be much easier for you and your guests to arrange, but also your guests will no doubt enjoy the opportunity for a city break if they have more time before or after your wedding. If you are thinking of getting married in or around Hampshire, whilst it’s easy to instantly think of countryside wedding venues, we do have a lot to offer in terms of beautiful city locations too. So in this blog I’ve decided to round up some of the best city wedding locations in or within easy reach of Hampshire.
The Queen’s House, Greenwich
This building is one of South East London’s hidden gems. I photographed a wedding here a few years ago and fell in love with the beautiful architecture. The Queen’s House was built between 1616 and 1635. Nestled within the Royal Borough of Greenwich, a few miles downriver of the City of London, it is an impressive former royal residence. The views of the river with London framed behind them are just stunning and provide a fantastic spot for dramatic wedding photography.
The Grand, Southampton
The Grand is heavily influenced by the French renaissance and dates back to 1872. Located inside a Grade II listed building, it is steeped in history. You can happily lose yourself in the beautiful details of this building, from elaborately framed windows to swathes of marbles and even little balconies framed by intricate iron work. I thoroughly enjoy taking photographs at this venue, where I am a recommended photographer. It feels decadent, sumptuous and effortlessly glamorous – the perfect backdrop for a classy city wedding.
Hotel Du Vin, Winchester
This beautiful Georgian building dates back to 1715 and is fortunately located right in the centre of Winchester. I am a preferred supplier here and it’s one of my favourite places to take photographs. The hotel itself is stunning, with a boutique feel, enjoying access to an idyllic private walled courtyard and garden – the ideal spot for relaxed, leisurely photos of the married couple mingling with their guests. While the hotel is a licensed building for ceremonies, couples also have the convenience of the Winchester Registry Office nearby, with their stunning selection of ceremony rooms. Find out more about Hotel Du Vin here.
Salisbury – Medieval Hall
Originally the ‘Great Hall’ of Salisbury Cathedral Deanery, the hall dates back to the 13th Century and provides an intimate and versatile space, perfect for a modern wedding with a historical twist. With a stunning backdrop to complement your ceremony, plus atmospheric lighting and all the modern conveniences you’d expect, you are sure to create an unforgettable experience for yourselves and your guests. I love the feel of this building and would absolutely love to take photographs here, so please get in touch if this is on your shortlist!
Winchester Royal Hotel
This city-centre gem dates back to the 16th century hotel and is the perfect combination of modern and traditional. With decor that speaks to Winchester’s previous status as the capital of England, yet modern must-haves such as an on-site car park, this venue is the perfect blend of everything you need to create an unforgettable wedding day. With 81 bedrooms, an award-winning Restaurant and a stunning walled garden for beautiful photography, it certainly does tick a lot of boxes. I have photographed some stunning weddings – it is the perfect stylish setting for timeless wedding photographs.
Winchester Guidlhall
The Guildhall Winchester sits on the historic broadway, a short walk from Winchester Cathedral, this impressive gothic building enjoys views of some of Winchester’s most beautiful spots. Completed in 1873, the building has a long history, but the site it was built on has a story that stretches even further back in time. Originally a nunnery stood here, founded by King Alfred the Great’s widow, Aelswith in 899AD. I know many of the couples I have photographed here have appreciated the range of spaces available to create a wedding ceremony and reception that works for them. I particularly love the architecture – it makes for some really incredible shots!
